Noland
has spread his work around Chicago and beyond,
through sheer determination - this was not Noland's
day job, but a labor of love, begun when Obama
was considered a longshot...
-- PROXIMITY MAGAZINE
The
idea for a poster campaign came to Noland in
the summer of 2006, when he was home recuperating
from a serious bicycle accident. He had been
pedaling through an intersection when a turning
car broadsided him. Noland woke the next day
in the hospital with tubes in his arms, a broken
cheek bone, two missing teeth and a dislocated
shoulder. Recovering in bed for six weeks, he
started thinking about what he wanted to do
with his life. "I wanted to do something
to make an impact. After the accident, I felt
like, 'Man, this is another chance at life.
You better make it good."
-- Chicago Tribune
This year, as voter turnout in primary elections
hits record numbers, Americans are looking for
a president who can unite the country around
a common purpose. Barack Obama, a Junior Senator
from Illinois, hopes to be that president, and
lead a new generation of American leadership
against the perils of the 21st century. Among
the thousands of people Senator Obama has already
inspired, is independent artist Ray Noland.
With his venture GoTellMama.org, Noland uses
a mixture of "fine art, politics, marketing,
and strategy" to spread awareness and
create enthusiasm about the Obama campaign...
-- URB MAGAZINE
Ray Noland, a graphic designer working out of
his apartment, crafted a series of inspirational,
retro-looking Obama images that began appearing,
graffiti-style, around Chicago on abandoned
buildings and light posts last summer. The exuberent
"Go Tell Mama - I'm for Obama" t-shirts
and a line of posters featuring the words "dream"
and "hope" make us think a little
bit of Andy Warhol and a lot of MLK, Jr....
- Chicago Style Magazine
Ray's OBAMA ART was also featured
on the front page of the Wall
Street Journal last week.

Last
week I was introduced to Ray Noland, the Chicago
artist who created the GOT NEXT exhibition of
Barack Obama inspired artwork.
Ray had just arrived in town, and was looking
for a venue to host the San Francisco stop on
his national tour. We set up a meeting, and Ray
took me out to his art-filled car. He is in the
midst of a self-financed tour across North America,
putting on art shows, and his station wagon was
literally OVERFLOWING with art. Ray pulled out
paintings and screen prints and posters and stickers
and stencils and spread them out on the sidewalk
in front of me. And as he showed me the art, he
told me his story. For the past year, Ray has
been on the road, putting on art shows in cities
coast-to-coast. His passion was inspiring, and
I agreed to help him put together an art show
in San Francisco, figuring that we could probably
do something in a month or so. Ray told me that
was not possible, as he had a bunch of confirmed
stops nationwide before the exhibition opens at
the Democratic National Convention in August.
So we really had no choice, and the San Francisco
GOT NEXT art show opens THIS THURSDAY at the Hotel
des Arts.
We apologize for the late notice, and hope you
can make the opening on Thursday.
START SOMA has created political art shows since
our inception (see below for an update on our
PROPAGANDA III tour), and I am personally honored
to host the GOT NEXT exhibition in San Francisco.
Ray Noland is a truly passionate CREATOR, and
I hope a whole bunch of people come to the opening
at the Hotel des Arts to see what he has created.
If you can't make opening night on Thursday, the
artwork + installations will continue to occupy
the entire main floor of the Art Hotel until sometime
on Saturday, when Ray takes it all down and drives
to Los Angeles for the next stop on his tour.
I personally believe that the medium AND the message
are worth checking out, and I hope you agree.

PROPAGANDA
III
WORLD TOUR: 2007-2009
|
In
2003, THE FIRST PROPAGANDA ART SHOW
opened in San Francisco.
In 2005, PROPAGANDA 2.0 opened
in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
In 2007, START SOMA invited artists to create
political artwork for the PROPAGANDA
III WORLD TOUR. Artists from around
the world submitted nearly 600 political posters,
and the entire collection is now viewable online:
THE
PROPAGANDA III ONLINE GALLERY
There
has been no curation and absolutely NO CENSORSHIP
of any sort - EVERY submitted poster was included
in the exhibition with NO exceptions. Expressed
political viewpoints, be they left, right, or
center, are displayed side-by-side, both online
and in the series of ongoing real world exhibitions.
NO art will be sold at any of the shows, although
copies of the posters are available for sale
through the websites of many of the participating
artists. This is NOT a commercial art show,
but rather a celebration of free speech + untrammeled
freedom of expression.
